On 30 November 2023, UOL organised a farm tour for 40 residents from AWWA Senior Community Home* to learn how mushrooms and wheatgrass are grown and harvested. They even got to taste the fresh produce at the farm!

Accompanied by about 20 UOL volunteers, the seniors participated in a guided tour of the greenhouse at Kin Yan Agrotech in Lim Chu Kang. They were introduced to a variety of mushrooms that range from Pink Oyster to Golden Spring, as well as wheatgrass and pea sprouts. They also engaged in demonstrations and hands-on activities to juice and taste the fresh wheatgrass, and sample an assortment of mushrooms.

At the end of the farm tour, each senior received a mushroom growing kit that they can bring home to harvest themselves with their newfound knowledge.

Besides connecting with nature, the usually home-bound seniors had an enjoyable time bonding with the volunteers who befriended and care for them during the outing.

*AWWA Senior Community Home (SCH) provides accommodation for independent seniors who have no family, and/or means of financial support. SCH organises regular activities to support the physical, social and mental health needs of seniors, and helps them take charge of their shared spaces, and daily living needs.
