The second series of an art jamming workshop sponsored and hosted by UOL was back on 25 and 26 November 2023, this time led by ART:DIS artist, Joe Lee, who drew participants in with his pointillism technique.

During the four art jamming workshops held over two days at United Square, about 30 participants of all ages learnt to use chopsticks, vibrant paints and some even used their fingers, to “dot” out an artwork, a style known as pointillism art. As a deaf artist, Joe conducted the workshops with the assistance of a sign interpreter.

Shoppers had to make a minimum purchase of $30 at the mall to redeem a workshop pass. One of the participants, Mr Lim K.H., aged 69, shared about his support for the workshop. He said: “By providing a platform for people with special needs to showcase their abilities, people can appreciate their talents. I hope that Joe can continue to do what he loves and communicate his passion back to us.”

The workshops were held together with an art showcase at United Square, featuring 19 artworks by Joe and another talented artist, Natalie Holstad. Joe and Natalie were also the respective recipients of the Merit and Highly Commended awards of the inaugural UOL X ART:DIS Art Prize 2023, which was launched in May this year in conjunction with UOL’s 60th anniversary year and the 30th year of ART:DIS.

The first series of the art showcase held from 14 April to 1 November 2023 featured works of other two ART:DIS artists, Eugene Soh and Tay Bee Lian. Eugene conducted the first run of the art jamming workshops on abstract painting technique.

The art showcase by Joe and Natalie will run till 30 April 2024 at United Square, Level 1, near the escalators above Ya Kun Kaya Toast. Digital prints of their artworks are available for purchase at $150 each.
